Company: Upstagers Dramatic Club

Spring is here and the Upstagers have a new play!
After a hugely successful season with his Agatha Christie adaptation, The Diamond Snow, our resident director and theatre extraordinaire, Paul Spence, is up to his magic again – this time inspired by Anton Chekov! Chekov is known for his drama, but his plays were also known for their comedy, and of course, melodrama. Our new story takes place on a wine estate in the Cape Colony in the summer of 1899. The estate, owned by the Reitz family, borders onto a lake. There are rumours from the Boer Republic in the Transvaal of a coming war with Britain. For the three Reitz sisters and their brother, this summer will bring love, comedy and unexpected drama. Suddenly in Summer is a new play by the Upstagers Dramatic Club, and has been adapted by Paul Spence from the writings of Russia’s greatest playwright, Anton Chekov, combining The Seagull and The Three Sisters. The production will be directed by Timothy Redpath, and is produced by William le Cordeur, director of the Schlesinger Theatre. Suddenly in Summer is the second UDC production.

The Upstagers are a new theatre company in the KZN Midlands based at the Schlesinger Theatre, Michaelhouse. The Diamond Snow, an Agatha Christie mystery, was performed this July at the Schlesinger Theatre. Many thanks to all those who supported Oh, What a Lovely War! which was performed wonderfully by Michaelhouse boys and St Anne’s girls. After Suddenly in Summer, the 2018 season ends with a variety show on October 24.
